When to change your lock?
Protect your home and your family. These are the situations where it's advisable to upgrade your lock:
If your cylinder or lock is more than 10 years old, it's very likely obsolete and can be opened quickly, silently and without leaving any marks.
If you didn't change the cylinder when you moved in, you can't know who else has keys to your home. Previous tenants or their relatives could have copies.
If your neighbours have good escutcheons with good cylinders and you have an obsolete lock… guess where burglars would rather break in?
If it doesn't open well, the key is hard to turn or you have to pull the handle, it's warning you there's a problem or it's reaching the end of its life. Get ahead of it and avoid trouble.
If you value what's in your home even a little, upgrade at least to a decent lock. For little money you can raise your security a great deal.
I recommend leaving a couple of copies of your keys with close relatives in case you lose them or lock them inside.

It depends. If your cylinder is low quality then yes, it can be a good idea, because leaving the key in and turned can prevent entry by bumping and impressioning. On the other hand, in an emergency nobody with the original key would be able to open the door from outside to help you. The best solution is to fit a high-security cylinder with a double clutch, so you get the best of both worlds.
No! That should only ever be a last resort. It will work at first, but over time the dust and dirt particles bind to the oil, compact, and cause the cylinder to fail. The first choice is always the product made specifically by the cylinder's manufacturer; if there isn't one (and provided no lubricant has been applied before) I'd recommend graphite powder, the thinnest of layers — it polishes the components and makes the cylinder run more smoothly.
It's hard to know without the right knowledge. You can search your cylinder's model online alongside the words "impressioning" or "bumping". Don't be alarmed if you find videos of your cylinder being opened in seconds without damage — unfortunately around 80% of the cylinders fitted today can be opened in seconds. Simply replace the cylinder with a secure one as soon as you can.
