Send me a few photos and I'll explain the options
In many cases a few photos help me identify the system and prepare the options before I travel out. If you can, send me:
- A photo of the current key.
- A photo of the cylinder and the outer escutcheon.
- A photo of the door edge with the door open.
- A general photo of the door.
- A short explanation of what's happening or why you need the change.
You don't need to know the brand, the model or the measurements. If I need anything else, I'll ask.
SEND PHOTOS ON WHATSAPPChange the cylinder, replace the lock, or repair it?
Not every door problem is solved by changing the same part. Before recommending a job, it's worth working out which part is actually failing and what you want to achieve.
Replace only the cylinder
The cylinder is the part the key goes into. Replacing it makes the old keys stop working, and on many doors it does not mean replacing the whole lock.
This is usually the right choice when the lock itself works fine, but you need new keys, have lost track of who holds a copy, or the cylinder is worn.
Repair or adjust
If the key is hard to turn, the door rubs, or the mechanism catches, the cause needs finding first. It can be the cylinder, the lock, the strike plate, or how the door is aligned.
When a reliable repair or adjustment exists, there is no point replacing parts that still work correctly.
Replace the lock
The lock is the mechanism that drives the latch, the bolts, or the different locking points. Replacing it can be necessary when the whole mechanism is damaged, badly worn, cannot be repaired reliably, or no compatible parts exist.
I will not replace a part without explaining why first, and what your alternatives are.
I advise. You decide.
Cylinder replacement in Tarragona
Changing the cylinder gets back control of your keys without replacing the whole lock, as long as the mechanism fitted is in good condition.
You have lost your keys or they were stolen
Even with a spare copy, you may not know who holds the old keys. Once a new cylinder is fitted, the old keys stop opening the door.
You have moved house or into a rented home
It is not always possible to know how many copies exist or who might keep one. A new cylinder lets you decide, from that moment, who has access.
The person who should have access has changed
Useful after a separation, a change of tenant, a change of staff, or any situation where an old copy should no longer work.
The cylinder is worn or works unevenly
If the key is hard to insert, turns badly or sticks, I will check whether the problem is the cylinder or another part of the door before replacing it.
If your main goal is to reinforce the door with a cylinder, an escutcheon or a security deadbolt, see the security installation options.
Need a lock repaired in Tarragona?
A lock that stiffens, catches, or needs an odd movement to open is not working normally. Checking it in time can stop it jamming completely.
The key goes in but turns with difficulty
There may be wear, pressure on the mechanism, a cylinder problem, or misalignment between the door and the frame. It's not a good idea to keep forcing the key.
The key turns but the lock doesn't respond properly
If the bolts, the latch or the locking points don't move the way they should, I'll check the mechanism before it stops working completely.
The key gets stuck or is hard to remove
Avoid pulling hard or moving it roughly — it could snap inside the cylinder. The cause of the jam needs checking first.
You have to lift, push or pull the door
When a door needs a "knack" to close, the problem can be the alignment, the hinges, the strike plate or the locking points, and not necessarily the cylinder.
The handle, the latch or the locking points fail
Play in the handle, a latch that doesn't spring back, or locking points that rub are symptoms worth checking before you carry on using the mechanism.
These symptoms can have different causes. It's not safe to assume the cylinder is always to blame.
If your door needs a "knack" to open or close, there is something worth checking.
Can the lock be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Not every faulty lock needs replacing. The decision depends on the condition of the mechanism, the cause of the fault, whether parts are available, and whether the final fix will be reliable.
It can usually be repaired or adjusted when:
- The fault is limited to one replaceable part.
- The door or the strike plate is out of alignment.
- Compatible parts are available.
- The main mechanism is still in good condition.
- The repair restores reliable operation.
Replacing it can make more sense when:
- The mechanism is broken or badly worn.
- Several parts are damaged.
- No compatible parts can be found.
- It has been forced and the system is compromised.
- A repair could not guarantee reliable operation.
If it can be repaired properly, I'll tell you. If it isn't worth it, I'll explain why and what the alternatives are.
Repair when possible. Replace only when necessary.

Frequently asked questions about lock replacement
Cylinder replacement is available from 59€ + VAT with fitting included. The final cost depends on the model, the size and how the door is set up. Before I start I'll confirm the compatible option and the price.
It depends on the type of fault, the time needed, the parts and the call-out. I'll check the problem first and explain the price before doing the repair.
Yes. On many doors only the cylinder needs replacing, keeping the existing lock. Before I do it, I'll check the mechanism is in good condition and that the new cylinder is compatible.
It depends on its condition. If the fault is limited and a reliable repair exists, the mechanism can be kept. If it is badly worn, no parts are available, or a repair would not be reliable, replacing it can make more sense. I'll explain the alternatives before you decide.
Once the new cylinder is fitted, the old keys stop opening the door. Only the new keys, and any copies made afterwards, will work.
If you can, send a photo of the key, of the cylinder and the escutcheon, of the door edge with the door open, and a general photo of the door. Add a short explanation of what's happening. You don't need to know the brand or the measurements.
