A high-security cylinder on its own does not guarantee the whole door has the same level of protection. The escutcheon, the lock, how exposed the cylinder is, the locking points, the frame and the quality of the fitting all matter too.
It is not about fitting the most expensive part — it is about making sure no single point is clearly weaker than the rest of the door.
Protection against different kinds of attack
Security models can include different protections. Not all of them offer the same performance, and no single feature on its own should be the only reason to choose one.
- Bumping: some cylinders include features designed to make this manipulation technique harder.
- Picking and manipulation: the internal layout can make it harder to manipulate the cylinder with tools.
- Impressioning: some models add protections meant to make it harder to obtain a working key by manipulation.
- Drilling: some cylinders and escutcheons include reinforced material in their most exposed points.
- Snapping and extraction: the right cylinder length, its build, and the outer escutcheon all help reduce how exposed it is.
